Part of what makes this farm a living laboratory is seeing what Iowa-grown aronia can become in good hands. Arozen, a family operation in Mediapolis, Iowa, cold-presses aronia into juice blends and a single-ingredient powder.

A World Record Holder's Endurance Secret

The juice behind the story

Levi didn’t plant aronia to chase a market. “I was looking for diversity for our farm,” he says, “and something native to the Midwest.” What grew from that became Levi’s Indigenous Fruit Enterprises — and a juice with a story behind it.

Growing aronia berries has become a great analogy for how we can work sustainably with nature to grow food.
— Levi Lyle
A Living Laboratory for Stewardship

The aronia is the evidence. The land is the lesson.

Behind the juice is a 250-acre farm Levi runs with his father, Trent —  ground farmed in no-till for thirty years, now growing certified-organic crops alongside the orchard. The same care that makes the soil healthy is what makes the fruit harvest bountiful.

Spring

Prune

The shrubs are pruned to rejuvenate them for the season ahead.

Summer

Tend

Levi mows the rows to keep grass and weeds at bay while goats, chickens, and wildlife move through the orchard keeping pests in check and improving the health of the system.

September

Harvest

The dark, heavy berries come in — then pressed and bottled cold.

Winter

Rest

By Thanksgiving the season closes; the land rests until spring.

Also From the Farm

Beyond the flagship

Aronia is the heart of Levi's Farm, but it isn't the only native crop in the ground. Each was chosen for the same reasons: indigenous, sustainable, suited to this soil, and organic certified.

Among the first fruits to ripen each season.

Mid-Spring · U-Pick

The first experimental — and then commercial — dwarf cherry orchard in the United States.

From the Field

Growing Aronia

The farm is a classroom as much as a business. For the growers and acreage owners who ask, here's what Levi has learned.

A Sustainable Crop
The University of Wisconsin–Madison gives aronia top marks for sustainability — adaptability, pest resistance, short time to first yield, and machine-harvest potential. Shrubs bear their first berries in about three years.
Spacing
Levi recommends 3 feet between plants and 10–12 feet between rows — wide enough for mechanical mowers and overhead harvesters.
The Plant Itself
Aronia (Aronia melanocarpa), also called chokeberry, grows 6–8 feet tall in Zones 3–8, wants full sun or partial shade and well-drained soil, and yields roughly 2 pounds per bush a year.
Varieties
Viking for highest yields; Nero for a smaller shrub; Autumn Magic for ornamental use.
